Lepetane

Text: Wikipedia

When we passed Verige and looked over to Perast, two islands and mountaintops to our heart’s content, we arrived to Lepetane, which lies in an idyllic peace, protected from the North wind.
During the Middle ages Lepetane was called “The Place of Saint Lovrienec” for the church which existed there and which is connected to a legend of three brothers – saints: Andria, Peter and Lovrienec.
“Lepetane” got its current name by the nicknames of some Perast families (“Lepetanus”) which owned land in this area.

Đurđevića Tara Bridge

Posted by Ivan Stojanovic On 23 November 2009

Most na Đurđevića Tari Đurđevića Tara Bridge is an arch bridge over the Tara River in northern Montenegro. It is located at the crossroads between Mojkovac, Žabljak and Pljevlja, between the villages of Budečevica and Trešnjica.
It was built between 1937 and 1940 and designed by Mijat Trojanović, who also oversaw the construction. Isaac Russo was the Chief Engineer. When it was finished, it was the biggest vehicular concrete arch bridge in Europe.
The bridge is 365 m long, and has five arches, the biggest having span of 116 m. The distance between the roadbed and the river is 172 m.
Following the German-led invasion of Yugoslavia in April 1941, much of Montenegro, including the Tara Canyon, came under Italian occupation, and, due to the suitability of the mountainous terrain for guerilla warfare, became a hotbed of the communist Partisan uprising. The fighting between the Partisans and Italian occupiers aided by Serb-nationalist Chetniks claimed the Tara Bridge in 1942 during an Italian-Chetnik offensive. Aided by one of the bridge engineers, Lazar Jaukovic, a Partisan raiding party blew up the central arch, cutting off the only feasible crossing over the Tara Canyon and thus blocking the Italian/Chetnik advance. It was a heroic act that cost Jaukovic his life: When he was eventually captured, the Italians executed the engineer on his bridge. These events were made into a movie called “Most”, in [1969].
In 1946, the bridge was rebuilt. It remains an engineering marvel and the main crossing point over the Tara Canyon.

Cathedral of Saint Tryphon

Katedrala Svetog Tripuna

The Cathedral of Saint Tryphon (Montenegrin: Katedrala Svetog Trifuna/Катедрала Светог Трифуна) in Kotor is one of two Roman Catholic cathedrals in Montenegro. It is the seat of the Catholic Bishopric of Kotor which covers the entire gulf, currently led by Bishop Mons. Ilija Janjić.

It is located in the city of Kotor, one of the best preserved and most beautiful medieval fortified towns in the Mediterranean. It was built in honor of Saint Tryphon (local name Sveti Tripun), the patron and protector of the city, on the same site where an older church had already existed. That earlier church was built in 809 by Andrija (Andreaccio) Saracenis, a citizen of Kotor, where the remains of the Saint were kept after being brought from Istanbul (then Constantinople).

This Roman Catholic cathedral is the largest and most beautiful building in Kotor, and was consecrated on June 19, 1166.[1] The cathedral was seriously damaged and rebuilt after the earthquake of 1667, but there were not enough funds for its complete reconstruction. That is the reason why its two towers are so different one from the other. Another massive earthquake in April 1979, which completely devastated the Montenegro coast, also greatly damaged the cathedral. Luckily, it has been salvaged and the careful restoration of parts of its interior has not been completed until a few years ago. Today, this formidable piece of Romanesque architecture, one of the oldest and perhaps the most beautiful monument along the Adriatic Sea, is showing its splendor again.

It contains a rich collection of artifacts. Older than many famous churches and cathedrals in Europe, the Cathedral of St. Tryphon has a treasury of immense value. In its interior there are frescos from the 14th century, a stone ornament above the main altar in which the life of St. Tryphon is depicted, as well as a relief of saints in gold and silver. The most representative works of Kotor’s masters and craftsmen are kept in this Cathedral, making its collection quite unique.

The collection of art objects includes a silver hand and a cross, decorated with ornaments and figures in relief. It is only a part of the valuable objects of the Treasury of this unique sacral building which was the City Hall in the past.

Today, it is the best known tourist attraction in Kotor and a symbol of the city: the Saint is depicted in the city’s coat of arms, along with a lion and the Mount of San Giovanni (St. John).
