Ulcinj Salina is located in the south of Montenegro, with about 14.5 km2 of salt pools. It was built in the region with the highest number of sunny days, the maximum insolation on the Adriatic – 2567 hours of sunshine and the highest number of tropical days in the former Yugoslavia.

 Once there was Zogajsko mud (“zog” in Albanian means “bird which began to take on the form of anthropogenic infrastructure late thirties of the XIX century. Today it artificially, by man orchestrated ecosystem, where a pre-determined dates of filling the pool with sea water, the water level in them and its salinity.Solana is “sandwiched” the most important ornithological sites in the Adriatic and beyond: they are of international importance for birds Long Beach, Ada Bojana, and Sasko Lake Skadar and Velipoja in Albania.Ulcinj Solana is one of the ten largest and one of the youngest salt pounds in the Mediterranean.

 So far, the salt pan pools described 114 species of plants. Depending on the salinity of the water in some pools, Solana has so far registered 23 species of fish. 12 species of amphibians and 28 species of reptiles survive in the hellish summer conditions Solana. So far, this “cultural lagoon” recorded 241 species of birds, about 50% of the total number of bird species registered in Europe.

 Preliminary studies have suggested its high quality of mud, primarily for the treatment of arthritis and skin diseases. Solana will soon be available on the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance especially as Waterfowl Habitat. It is the first private nature park in Montenegro.
